Exactly what do I have to look for (specification) when I purchase
these cards not from Sun but want them to work with Sun Rays?

That's a very easy question to answer:

    - The card must use either the T=0 or T=1 protocol.

    - The card must be able to present a unique ID of some sort to
the system without any security conditions (i.e. the card has
to provide the unique ID with requiring a PIN for example).

The unique ID only has to be unique within the context of cards of that
family, which means that if Sun Ray identifies the card as a Payflex card,
it can have a unique ID of 12345678, and if Sun Ray identifies the card as
an OpenPlatform card, it can also have a unique ID of 12345678, because
Sun Ray will concatenate the unique ID to the card type, resulting in
unique token IDs that look like this:

    Payflex.12345678
    OpenPlatform.12345678

which, to Sun Ray, are different token IDs.

Sun Ray already recognizes a lot of smartcards and smartcard families,
but if you card is not recognized, you can easily write a smartcard config
file and install that on your Sun Ray server which will identify your card
type. We are going to be making a paper available publically soon that will
describe how to do this.
