Yes, I'm concerned with the first part. As I understand, Solaris
expects the thumb drive to contain a FAT filesystem right from
the start. In case of bootable drives the data structure is more
like an MBR harddisk, with a FAT partition hidden inside (after
sector 63).

Interesting idea, but I guess not feasible, not in general-purpose
sunrays anyway :)
