I've just setup a workgroup of 20 software developers on a PrimePower
450 with four 2Ghz processors and 16GB of memory. (Equivilent to a
SunFire v445)
They are only running the server at 20%, and only consuming 6GB of
virtual memory. The only problem I've had to date, is a runaway script
filling the process table. (Due to the wonderful scripting talents of
one of the programmers.) A couple of /etc/system and resource
management tweeks, and even that problem has been minimized.
When deciding on a plaform for a project, I always go with the biggest
'practical' system that budget will allow.
As other have said, the application set should determine the platform.
(Solaris / Linux)
If you stay with Solaris, I'd recommend the SunFire
v245,2x1.5,2GB,2x73GB,2xPSU. It has the basis for redundancy built-in.
If something fails, remote it and continue on what's left. That can't
be said for the other configurations you have been provided.
As to a Linux platform, I do recommend the SunFire x4200. I have four
of them running RedHat 4 (RHEL4_U3)
