Are you using CDE or JDS/Gnone? You mention CDE in the past tense so I imagine you are using JDS now.
Which means you're probably using gnome-terminal. With that you just go to:
Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts... Scroll down to the bottom and click on Contents and hit Back Space.

Any other terminal program I can't suggest any help.
