We have been experiencing a couple issues when tyring to print to a printer attached via usb to a Sun Ray. The first issue may have been addressed in SRSS 4.0 u2, in our testing with the beta release we have not been able to reproduce the problem but I would be interested to know if anyone has encountered this.
The first issue. Our application is sending data directly to /tmp/SUMWut/units/IEEE.../dev/printers/5191-c9 which is a Star Thermal receipt printer. The printer runs out of paper during the printing of a receipt. After this occurs we can not print to the printer unless we reboot the server or issue a utrestart command both of which are quite disruptive to other users on the system. Has anyone seen this occur? Was there a bug that was fixed in 4.0 u2? Is there a way to reset a single Sun Ray to resolve a peripheral communications error like this? The second issue. We have created an lp printer which prints to a USB printer attached to a Sun Ray so that multiple users can print to it. The problem we are experiencing is that the first 2 or 3 print requests are processed in a timely manner as would be expected but subsequent request get stuck in the queue for a number of minutes. We have worked around this by adding an Ethernet adapter to the printer and setting it up directly on the network but this does require extra hardware and cabling. Any recommendations on a way to support sharing of a Sun Ray USB printer? -- Bruce Silveria SUM/IT Systems c: 770-634-7643 f: 678-819-2213
