I think the Sun Ray unit is sending garbage values for some of
the statistics parameters it reports to authd. A similar bug
(4745486) was reported with 1.3 firmware a long time ago. That
bug is still open, the problem could not be reproduced here.
You might have managed to reproduce it; perhaps it takes a
particular combination of firmware and smartcard to trigger it.

It used to be that authd handled this case by disconnecting the
unit, and then continuing with normal operation. It should still
be doing that, but based on your report of a lockup it seems likely
that it's no longer handling this case correctly.

It would he helpful if you could open a support call with Sun and
give them as much information as you can about your environment:
firmware revisions being used, smartcards being used, anything
that might help a Sun engineer to reproduce the problem. The
contents of the /var/opt/SUNWut/messages and auth_log files from
around the time of the failure would be helpful too, and if you can
get a snoop capture of the authd traffic (to and from TCP port 7009
at the server) at the time of the failure that would be very
interesting.
