thanks for your reply. With your suggestions and after installing java 1.6 (from jdk-6u6-solaris-i586.tar), it works! Hopefully, the installation of java 1.6 is correct, and the link is done during the installation:
w2100-root% ll /usr/java
2 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 15 Jun 3 14:41 /usr/java -> jdk/jdk1.6.0_06

A simple question: is java 1.6 requirement explained in the official installation document?
In the document 820-0413-12, at page 24, thre is:
"SRSS 4.0 requires JRE version 1.5 or later. The latest Java release is available at:"

SRSS uses the DHCP software provided by the operating system. On the SXDE release you are using that software requires java 1.6. and always uses the Java version pointed to by /usr/java. Unless you found a bug in the SXDE installer, the system should be set up after install to have /usr/java pointing to a 1.6 instance.

In some older release of SXDE I ran into problems myself, when I tried to use some software (written for an older Solaris version), which also uses the Java version pointed to by /usr/java, but which did not work with JRE 1.6.

The attempt to fix such issues by changing the /usr/java symlink to point to an older JRE or JDK breaks system software, such as the dhcp tools, that relies on /usr/java pointing to a newer JRE.

The JRE requirement for SRSS only concerns software that is part of SRSS itself and that uses the Java version you specified when running utinstall to install SRSS (you don't need to accept the default of /usr/java there, but can point SRSS to a suitable java version of your choice. But SRSS also depends on a working operating system, so if parts of the OS are broken, whether by an installer bug or by a misguided configuration change, parts of SRSS built upon the broken feature will also fail.

And of course with SXDE you are using an unsupported platform for SRSS, so some adjustments or workarounds may be needed to make things work.
