Hi,

Hopefully life will be better in the future for Ubuntu users with the updates to the wiki following my rather traumatic upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 and SRSS 4.0.

I hope that in the future the OSD messages and logging around 26D will be improved - it is a real area of gotcha for inexperienced Linux admins. For just about every other situation where you get stuck at an OSD message there is a far more limited set of potential problems.

My grateful thanks to all who have helped.

Anyway, a few other things that it would be good to resolve:

1. Near the top of the SRSS installation we install xkb-data-legacy, that requires ubuntu-desktop to be removed. I wonder if there is an alternative that would be compatible with ubuntu-desktop as that installs so many related packages.

2. I am making some progress with pulseaudio. For example quicktime movies within firefox are playing sound (nothing else is). Hopefully we can get sound working properly in Ubuntu. That would be particularly great as flash is now working with proper colours and a much better frame rate than before. YouTube and BBC News clips are both very watchable now.

3. I have one security oddity. Many of the GUI admin applications in Ubuntu (user-admin etc) have an unlock button. Click this, enter the sudo users password and you can do admin. But this only works on the server console, everywhere else the unlock button is disabled.

4. I find the keyboard on the server locks once sun rays have been booted. However, clicking "options/remote login by XDMCP" and then pressing escape gets me back to the normal greeter with the keyboard working. How weird is that!

Anyway very pleased to be up and running again. Once more my thanks to all who helped.

Dave
