We tried this solution here for awhile and didn't like it.

The closest we were able to come to not having local login prompt was by using
"choose host from list" (I think that's what it's called). If a remote session
is started using this method, after it ends it will return to the list instead
of to the local login screen. However, users can still click "return to
localhost", and if a Sun Ray is power cycled I think it still goes back to the
standard login.

That being said, the performance will definitely be worse. While the Sun Rays
get an optimized connection to the Solaris server using Sun Ray protocol,
remote login is just XDMCP. I suspect that it is highly inefficient to deal
with translating XDMCP into Sun Ray ALP. You didn't really mention which
network the trunked gigabit network interfaces were on, but Sun Ray ALP uses
very little bandwidth, especially when compared to XDMCP, so you would
definitely want a bigger pipe between the Solaris and Linux servers. I don't
know that it would make a difference for only 4 clients, though.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [SunRay-Users] SunRay-Server not for login

Hi all,

we are running a SunRay-Cluster (SRSS 4.0) with 3 hosts and Red Hat
Linux (r4)
and we are not very happy with this solution. Before we have a SPARC-
Cluster
and this was okay. The hosts are server for the SunRays and also
login- and
application server for the user. And we have a lot of different
software:
EDA-Software, eclipse, other CAD-tools, mathematic tools and much more.

Now i have the chance to use a SunFire V880 as SunRay-Server.

So we have the idea, to use the V880 as a SunRay-Server without login
and
the other hosts as application-server. The test application server is
now a host with Red Hat r5.2. The SunRay server software is only running
on the V880 with Solaris 10.

Now i have two problems:

- On the application server xdm is enabled. So i can do a remote login
to this host via the login gui from the V880. We are normally using
gnome.

The X11 performance is now very poor. The windows need sometimes
several seconds to build up. Moving a window is also very poor.

Are their any hints avaiable to tune the X11 performance?

(I use a dedicated net for the SunRays and two gigabit interfaces
in trunking mode. And in the moment i have only 4 units attached.)

- The SunRay-Server offers the login gui on the SunRays. The users
have to select a host via remote login. I have disabled the user
login on the SunRay-Server. This gui is okay, but this is not a
good solution.

So my question is, are their any docs and infos avaiable how to setup
a SunRay-Server without login and other hosts with login?
I don't want to see a login gui from a server, i can't use.
And i don't want to install the SunRay software on the Linux hosts.
It is possible to see only the hostchooser on the SunRays?

Thanx for any hints
