I did it the other way round, adopted gdm.conf to the new paths.

For me, both gdmgreeter and gdmlogin are working. Does 
adding the lines
 
[debug]
Enable=true 

to gdm.conf give any further insights? The gdmgreeter has much more
options than gdmlogin, e.g., BackgroundImage or GraphicalThemeDir.
Are they all valid?
