I'm having a hard time figuring out a USB printing issue. This error
has happened 3 times in a week now at three different customers.
Each customer is running Solaris 10 u5 (x86) with SRSS 4.0 fully
patched. These are USB printers that we print directly to, not via a
spooler - so we send data directly to
/tmp/SUNWut/units/[SUN-RAY-ID]/dev/printers/[printer-name].
The printer will print and function normally, but once the printer
fails, say with a paper jam or even a paper out condition, when the
user recovers the error we can
no longer print to it. Some of the trouble shooting methods we have
tried (and failed with):
* We cycle power on the printer and the Sun Ray
* Unplug the printer until it 'disappears' from
/tmp/SUNWut/units/[SUN-RAY-ID]/dev and then plug it back in
* Have the user do a <STOP>+<A>
* We have used the GUI Admin tool to terminate the user's session.
We can't even cat to the printer. The only thing that seems to fix the
issue is to do a cold utrestart, of course with massive inconvenience
to other users.
One thing that we do notice is every time we unplug the printer for
long enough - or terminate the User's session - is that the device's
minor number gets incremented by one (+1). But yet we still can't cat
to it. It is as if somewhere in the software it is still trying to
send data to the old major / minor device location.
Any help would be much appreciated - this is really starting to
frustrate our customers.
