It was decided during the beta trial of srs4.0 ( summer 2007)
That the We Do Not Want the Pop up GUI to be installed by default.
If all the students in all schools where sun ray is installed have the
GUI to play with
it will cost a fortune in support - to put the IP paramaters right again
every evening.
There is a POP up GUI for all models but on SUNRAY 1:s you can only change
the TCP/IP setup.
ON the Sun Ray 2 series there is CPU and memory to run the VPN software
as well.
You need to explicitly download the "Firmware_GUI" to each unit you want
to have the
funktionality to avoid the situation described above.
Its Documented in the man page "utfwadm"

well, I am currently in a customer's lab with a couple of 270 and I
was not able to get the pop up menu .. I have
tried ctr-m, ctr-s, alt-m, alt-s, meta (or diamond key)-s/m
and nothing happens .. also tried them when the dtu
is booting .. but then went to the admin guide (again)
and found:
Pop-up GUI
Sun Ray Server Software provides optional functionality, called the Pop-up
Graphical User Interface (Pop-up GUI), which allows the entry of
configuration
parameters for a Sun Ray DTU from the attached keyboard. Most of these
configuration parameters are stored in the DTU’s flash memory.
Certain control key
combinations are used to invoke this new facility, which provides a
tree of menus
that can be navigated to set and examine configuration values.
Access Control
To accomodate customers with differering requirements with respect to
flexibility
and security, two versions of the DTU software are provided.
Note – The default version of Sun Ray DTU firmware installed at
/opt/SUNWut/lib/firmware does not enable the Pop-up GUI.
The Pop-up GUI-enabled version of the firmware is installed at:
/opt/SUNWut/lib/firmware_gui. To make the Pop-up GUI available, the
administrator must run utfwadm to install the firmware, using the -f
option.
so I did ...
bash-3.00# utfwadm -A -e 00144F7977DF -f
/opt/SUNWut/lib/firmware_gui/CoronaP8
Unit "00144F7977DF" will be upgraded at its next power-on
if it is served by host "srs-01" and is connected to
the network and is not already running firmware
version "GUI4.1_50_2008.09.25.12.37".
### stopped DHCP daemon
### started DHCP daemon
### reinitialized DHCP daemon
then tried stop-v and got the version information and
could access the configuration menu with stop-m
(in non-sun kbd should be ctr-pause-m) ..
just if someone was curious ...

All,
I know that Sunray Server Software Pop-up GUI doesn't work on Sun
Ray 1 and Sun Ray 170 I tried it and then
read this in the Release notes:
Integrated VPN Support
Sun Ray Server Software with the most recent firmware provides a
VPN solution
that does not require remote users to have separate VPN routers.
It does require,
however, that the corporate network utilize Cisco gateways that
support the Cisco
EasyVPN protocol. It also requires the optional Pop-up GUI firmware.
Integrated VPN support is available only on Sun Ray 2 DTUs:
â– Sun Ray 2
â– Sun Ray 2FS
â– Sun Ray 270
But is there a CLI (command line Interface) that will do the same
at the Pop-up GUI ?
Bill
