yes, i find that my alt and shift are swapped at login with a type 7 keyboard. after logging in, setting the correct type in the settings manager gives me proper keymaps. the login screen remains fubar but at least it's fine once my session starts. i'm sure that playing with xkb-data-legacy would fix it, but i'm not so worried yet. as far as i understand, xnewt hijacks the server-Standard config so you'll have to specify your own server section in gdm.conf and map it there. make sure it's not interfering with the flexiserver stuff that xnewt needs.
