I had the same experience so it might not be the hardware.
You can set Xsun or Xnewt as Xserver which will change the error message but I did not get it working yet.
See utxconfig man pages for setting the default Xserver.
Please let me know it you have it up and running.

Maybe you have hard disk or memory corruption, my advise check both memory and hard disk.

I used to have problems due to a faulty memory module, once i replaced it, all problems were solve.
