BTW what is this? Looks like a downed Heinkel He 111 with some

You are very close - this is a Heinkel He 111 H-8 Cable Cutter
which was
used to cut the cables of British barrage balloons which were put up
over
London and other parts of the UK during the war:

Fascinating. Never seen that before... I should have looked at the
file name in the attachment. I guess I am spoiled now that even
emacs displays images inline.
You have been assimilated (by the HTML/inline image/RTF e-mail Borg ;-)
cutting mechanism and their use was quickly abandoned. "A" for effort
though.
Yes, there was lots of misguided effort around here at that time.
Separate from any political issues, there was a lot of very
interesting and
useful work done during the war (on all sides) some of which created the
foundation of technologies that we all use today.
I am a bit of a WWII technical historian, having the good fortune that
my
ex-father in law and my stepfather were both in the war as engineers, so
between the three of us we can sit around all afternoon talking about
the
various different technologies that were developed.
Anyway, I don't recall that either of them used a Sun Ray during the
war,
and this straying a bit from the topic of this group.
