If we were to use SRSS on Ubuntu, is it safe to download and install
updates to Ubuntu?
I use Ubuntu as my primary home OS. Use SRSS 4.0 on Solaris 10 at work.
Ubuntu is always notifying you of updates in the repositories. Should
one avoid applying these updates to avoid breaking any SRSS specific
configuration files?
Hi Aaron,
Thats one of the reasons why we switched back - most kernel updates
require the audio and USB drivers etc. to be recompiled and things
like GDM updates may/may not (roll a dice) cause problems.
OpenSolaris has now evened the odds, it is not far off the usability
stakes that Ubuntu has, in actual fact it is very Ubuntu like - but
you get that Solaris dependability that is so important
Here's a tip regarding GDM updates. As long as you remain with 2.24
branch (we're not ready for 2.26 rewrite yet), after applying an update
you should be able to do:
/opt/SUNWut/lib/utctl.d/features/utgdmconfigctl disable
/opt/SUNWut/lib/utctl.d/features/utgdmconfigctl enable
Then restart GDM.
If an entirely new /etc/pam.d/gdm file is delivered, you might be better
off doing:
/opt/SUNWut/lib/utctl disable
/opt/SUNWut/lib/utctl enable
Which does a lot more work...
