I have solved the crash ...

it seems that the /etc/x11/xorg.conf on our jaunty box contains a 'bad' font 
... once I had
changed /opt/SUNWut/lib/utxsun to only include /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc in the 
font path
the crashing went away and things started working nicely ...

the only grief I have left is that the gdmgreeter keeps crashing
and I have to use the less optically attractive gdmlogin instead
...
