The uid is read from the /tmp/SUNWut/session_proc/DISPLAY file for the
display in question, and converted to a name using the standard pwent
functions.
That value is written from the Xstartup script on Solaris systems, or
the /opt/SUNWut/lib/prototype/Xstartup.SUNWut.prototype script which is
instrumented into the gdm PreSession script on Linux systems.
/dev/dtlocal has nothing to do with this, unless it's somehow used by
dtlogin itself. But on all of my S10 systems I do have /dev/dtlocal,
maybe something external to SRSS is breaking due to its absence.
Wait - did you say "xdm"? As in "I'm not running dtlogin"? I've never
heard of anyone running on Solaris without dtlogin, I have no idea what
might break... For starters it probably doesn't use Xstartup or the gdm
Presession hooks ;)
If you *really* want to forge into such unexplored territory, you want
to start by upgrading to 4.1, because a lot of the work that was done to
make gdm work on Solaris may carry over to xdm. But it's not going to be
a slam-dunk, sorry. After that you might touch up /etc/init.d/utsvc to
instrument /etc/opt/SUNWut/xmgr to point to /opt/SUNWut/lib/xmgr/xdm and
see how far that gets you (that was experimental, only used while we
were bootstrapping SRSS to use gdm, and not maintained actively since
then). I'd also look at /opt/SUNWut/lib/utctl.d/features/utgdmconfigctl
and try to adapt that to instrument xdm properly. Beyond that your guess
is as good as mine but you might be close at that point...

my sunray servers no longer have /dev/dtlocal, do I need it if
not using dtlogin. I can't seem to find any concrete info on dtlocal
except that it is used with utmpx/wtmpx. (probably why my "last" command
no longer shows local activity)
