Are there any messages in /var/log/gdm/:11.log ? (GDM directs stderr from each X server into a per-display logfile, where dtlogin used to send them all into /var/dt/Xerrors.) What does a 'truss' of the Xnewt process show? If the 'truss' shows that Xnewt is blocked in some system call, what does a 'pstack' of the Xnewt process show? Does a 'utrestart -c' help?
