Ah yes - that's a bug that's been fixed in 4.2 also. I'd sent a workaround to this list for this previously as well.
I just added it to the TWiki page.

I responded to the rest in a separate mail (although my comment about determining display should have been directed at gdm-binary, not Xnewt where it's obviously on the command line. gdm-binary is the difficult one).

An EA of 4.2 should be available in a few weeks, and should significantly simplify installation. Still required for OS2009.06 will be: - disabling NWAM (it's unlikely we're going to fix this in any release of SRSS, hopefully OpenSolaris will improve this area and we're lobbying for that)
- adding additional OSol packages
- editing loginGUI.start (since the I18N fix didn't make the release - we're working on getting it into the /support repo, there's nothing reasonable that we can do about this in SRSS itself) - manual addition to pam.conf (this will be handled automatically in the final 4.2 release but not EA1 pre-release)
