Many thanks for the hint! utdiskadm -m utdisk2p1 mounted the device in
all it's glory. ;-) Daniel Cifuentes' usbdrived, which is working really
great on USB-Sticks, kept me for not trying utdiskadm.

There is no size limit.
There is a bug where some memory cards aren't readable beyond 2GB.
I have used 250GB disks with all capacity available.
As for Andreas' problem, you could try mounting manually using utdiskadm -m.
If utdisk2p1 doesn't mount, try utdisk2.
