From a support perspective, you can't patch anything except for SRSS
itself :(
This is due to a combination of factors:
1 Linux distros, including RHEL and SLES, have been known to deliver
incompatible changes in patches and updates, and have been known to
break SRSS at such times. Linux frankly isn't as disciplined about
backwards-compatibility as Solaris, which has its pros as well as cons.
2 We simply can't test every possible patch combination and update
released by Red Hat and Novell. If we haven't tried it, we can't promise
it works.
From a practical use perspective, you *should* be OK, most of the time,
applying patches. If you encounter problems let us know, and if possible
we'll try to fix it, eventually, but obviously our priority is on known,
supported platforms.

Hi all,
is there a recommended way to patch Linux?
I am working normally more with Solaris, so i have some knowhow problems
with Linux.
My problem in one example:
When i want to use Sun Ray Software 5 and Sun Ray Soft Client 1.0
Early Access 1 (EA1), i
see as platform Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 U3.
When i install RHEL 5.3 and start package update (or in the past
up2date) i will
get all patches and then i am running RHEL 5.4 now.
So, what can i patch? Can i patch the kernel or can i only use the
kernel coming
with 5.3? When i use the initial kernel from 5.3, can i patch all the
other packages?
Thanx for any help!
Detlev
P.S.: I know, i can't patch GDM ....
