Hello,

This looks like the bug we ran into with Matlab where the Xnewt process (the X server for the SUNRay) core dumps due to a bug in the compiled in MESA library. I think SUN have recognised this as a bug, but as I don't have a support contract for the SUNRays specifically, they won't tell me the ID. I'm hoping it will be fixed in the upcoming SRSS 5 release.

So if I follow, it's the CentOS session that's terminating?
It sounds like the X server is crashing.
gdm might have logged some clues in /var/log/gdm or wherever it stores its logs (sorry, my RHEL system is down at the moment). I'm less familiar with Linux than Solaris, is there an equivalent of coreadm so that you can force core dumps to some particular location? If so, I'd do that and see if you can find a core dump for Xnewt. You might have to add a "ulimit -c unlimited" statement to /opt/SUNWut/lib/utxsun, so that Xnewt can leave a core dump.

Hi everyone,

I'm a new member of this list, so I hope my question is not a FAQ (I haven't found an answer in the archives, though).

At the moment, we're evaluating sun ray clients to replace our ageing sun workstations. We put together a demo setup, which is as follows:

- 1 sun ray unit, configured with the GUI firmware (because our network is managed at campus level, so we don't have access to the DHCP configuration, and the sun ray server and clients are in different buildings. If you have any comment about this setup, feel free to tell!)

- 1 sun v20z server, running solaris 10 and ssrs 4.1 (our sun sales rep told us that they found easier to configure ssrs on solaris than on linux, so we used one of our existing solaris boxes)

- 1 sun ultra40 M2 workstation running centos 5.2 (required by our CAD software. This machine will eventually be replaced by a larger one).

The scenario is as follow: all programs run on the ultra40, the v20z only runs srss. At the login screen, the user selects the ultra40.

Everything works okay, except a rather embarrassing problem: when the user runs a specific program (namely tecplot_sv, of the Sentaurus TCAD suite, from Synopsys), the X session terminates, and the login screen of the v20z is displayed.

I haven't been able to find anything interesting in the logs (either of the v20z or of the ultra40), but I'm not an expert and I'm not sure I've looked everywhere.

Apparently, this program uses some fancy graphics (it is a viewer for FEM simulation, with some 3D capability we don't really need), but I've been able to run successfully other programs (such as glxgears). I can run tecplot_sv remotely either through ssh or nxclient, so the program itself works.

I'm a bit lost, because I have no idea where to look to identify clearly the problem. I know it looks a bit complicated, but I'd appreciate any help. In any case, thank you for reading my long message!

Regards

Cyril
