Ubuntu 9.10 "karmic" does provide a gdm-2.20 package (for exactly this
reason, the "gdm - the next generation" has still too many regressions
and can't always replace gdm2.20).

So an "apt-get install gdm-2.20"  should mightily improve the situation 
for SRSS on ubuntu9.10
