Answering oneself is somewhat awkward, but going through the archives I
may have found the solution to the above question that I thought might
interest enough for others using the soft client. I am quoting from

So, if this is the case also with the Desktop Client software, then all
is perfect and setting the mtu in the client is an ever so easy solution
while having option 26 set in the DHCP configuration file (which is the
case in my LAN anyway). Thanks for such a convenient configuration
utility in the client!
