I think this may have to do with a missing dependency of libmotif.
The out of session authentication dialog is rendered using Motif.

Motif is ***still*** required for ***some*** login screens.
For those hitting this same issue, packages to install are
listed here: http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=162
I installed packages from Solaris 10 1/06 DVD and restarted
via "utrestart -c". Now problem appears to be worked-around.
