if you are interested, try this workaround:
- don't uninstall staroffice8, as it configured the file associations
- move /opt/staroffice8 in /opt/staroffice8.old
- link openoffice3 with /opt/staroffice8, for example:
ln -s ../../local/apps/opt/openoffice.org3 staroffice8
tested with thunderbird and dtfile, it's fine for me
