Hi Paul,
You'd have to tell us what LD_PRELOAD is set to answer that. Typically it is used to call a library (libc_ut.so) that helps applications that want to talk to /dev/audio respect $AUDIODEV.

you should modify /usr/bin/firefox and do that early on

try that

When I try to start firefox as a mortal from a Sun Ray session, it spawns the 
processes and shows as running in the process table, but never displays on the 
DTU.  When I open a terminal on the same DTU and become root, type firefox... 
it pops right up as expected.  All other apps, OpenOffice, calculator, etc all 
run fine as mortal on DTU.  As the same mortal, I can run firefox just fine 
from the console.
