Hi Paul,
You'd have to tell us what LD_PRELOAD is set to answer that. Typically
it is used to call a library (libc_ut.so) that helps applications that
want to talk to /dev/audio respect $AUDIODEV.

you should modify /usr/bin/firefox and do that early on
