I really hate the package checks we do. I need to file an RFE to stop
that.
No need. This has already been addressed for the next release. I doubt
it'll be made available in a 4.2 patch, however, because the changes are
extensive. As you said on the web page, it wasn't about checking whether
the packages are installed, it was about checking *where* they are
installed, with the vision being that we might want to relocate packages
(individually). The performance and sustaining impact was too great to
justify with such an unlikely model, so we backed it out from the (many)
places where we were doing this checking. We didn't eliminate all use of
utprodinfo, but we should have gotten the main offenders (calls to
utprodinfo -r and utprodinfo -p BASEDIR, and their C equivalents). We
should re-evaluate and see if there is any remaining low-hanging fruit.
This was CR 6895214.
