After the following steps the Sun Ray devices have (at last) been generated:
1) yum remove kernel-2.6.18-238.el5
2) yum groupremove "Development Tools"
3) yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
4) Uninstall SRS 5.2
5) Reinstall SRS 5.2

In steps 2) and 3) among other packages the kernel-devel package is removed and reinstalled. I am not sure whether these steps are really necessary because I still got the modprobe error after these steps. Furthermore, step 2) removes a couple of packages which are not installed automatically in step 3).

After uninstalling and reinstalling SRS 5.2 (steps 4) and 5)) the Sun Ray devices have been generated.

In retrospect, I assume my problem emerged because I did a yum update (which installed a new kernel package) and installed SRS 5.2 afterwards without an intermediate reboot.

At the end, I did a fresh install of CentOS 5.6 as well as SRS 5.2 with the following difference to my first installation:
1) yum update
2) reboot
3) yum remove kernel-2.6.18-238.el5
4) Install SRS 5.2 using utsetup

Now, everything seems to work are expected.

Yours,
Guido
