Personally, I'd investigate moving utdialog aside and replacing it with a wrapper that does this (assuming I couldn't figure out where the shell was going wrong and fix it), rather than trying to fix all callers. Of course, since the problem appears to be with the shell, rather than utdialog itself, this might not help. How on earth are the shells messing this up?
