Hi all,

I really need some hot tips for debugging kiosk problems. I have scoured the
mail archives and found bits and pieces. However, is there a "kiosk trouble
shooting guide" anywhere ?

Basically my kiosk does not seem to be launching even though it's defined:

    #/opt/SUNWut/sbin/utkiosk -e session
    KIOSK_SESSION=utmenu
    KIOSK_ENABLED=yes

Does
  /opt/SUNWkio/bin/kioskdesc print -s utmenu

correctly show your session description, with KIOSK_SESSION_EXEC set?

There are no log files in /var/opt/SUNWkio. And I cant really see any kiosk logs
in /var/opt/SUNWut/log.

Kiosk log output should be logged to /var/opt/SUNWut/log/messages. Try searching/grepping for a 'kiosk' tag.

I must note - it did used to work, however, i removed the sunray version of gdm
- broke everything and had to reinstall the sunray version of gdm - recovered
things. After this the kiosk no longer launches :-(

Any hot tips of where to start debugging ?

To really see what goes on in kiosk behind the scenes (but not within your session), try:

1. In /etc/opt/SUNWkio/kioskrc, change the KIOSK_DEBUG value to 1

2. Change /etc/syslog.conf to capture 'user.debug' output somewhere. You can either add this to an existing log file or create a new one. For example, try:

*.info;user.debug;mail,news.none        /var/log/debug_log

3. Get your syslogd to pick up the setting (some want the file to exist):

# touch /var/log/debug_log
# pkill -HUP syslogd

Disclaimer: details may vary depending on OS/distro.

Beware: such a debug log file may grow very quickly, so you should either remove the syslog.conf entry soon and/or add logrotate/logadm configuration to rotate and discard them when the grow too large.
