I just started fighting this myself.  In June the only significant change I
made was to install some Truetype fonts.  I left town for the first two weeks
in July but came back this weekend to the desktops freezing intermittently.  It
felt like there was a disk error, but the storage was fine and other services
were fine.  Performing ssh into the server was fine.

I shut down the server yesterday and rebooted.  Today I stepped out for an hour
and came back to the symptoms you describe.  The errors in
/var/opt/SUNWut/log/messages were:

Jul 17 04:00:25 dl585 xscreensaver[18611]: [ID 508707 user.error]
pam_sunray:get_auth_perm: ut_setproperties username returned -1
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 guloginGUI: [ID 634092 user.notice] Error opening catalog
nscloginGUI
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 guloginGUI: [ID 693915 user.notice] Error opening PAM
message catalog: [libpam]
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 last message repeated 1 time
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 guloginGUI: [ID 693915 user.notice] Error opening PAM
message catalog: [pam_unix]
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 last message repeated 1 time
Jul 17 04:00:28 dl585 guloginGUI: [ID 693915 user.notice] Error opening PAM
message catalog: [pam_smartcard]

I finally did utrestart -c and it seemed to clear up, but have lots of errors
in /var/adm/messages and I don't know which ones to care about and which to
ignore.  As of right now it seems to be working, but I wonder what is going on?

What errors are you seeing in the logs?

Marty
