Thin clients have never been about the cost of a unit (although it is generally very low), it's about the total cost of ownership and often, security.
Imagine if you will, a large company with 1000 PCs. PCs fail about once every 3 years on average, which means you'll get one failing every day or so. Imagine what is costs to employ people just to deal with that problem, let alone cost of electricity, regular support etc. Thin clients are not about cheap as chips hardware, it's about a better all round solution for certain types of business. That creates a problem though, because the money made from large enterprises is mostly support contracts, not hardware. So selling something reliable, dependable, which does not need much support does not make much sense from a business point of view. You're better of selling a crappy solution on top of which you can sell expensive support. The razors and razor blades model really.
