What's the definition of an original fan, and >is there a divide between 'original fans' and 'next generation fans'? >This isn't a sarcastic or hypothetical question, it's a genuine remark, >since I'm wondering where "new" Sunscreem fans have been born from, >since they haven't officially released anything totally new for quite a >while, and so on. By no doubt am I a "new" fan. (New fans vs. old fans...that idea really does crack me up.) I probably became a fan, though, in a unique way. (OK, just so you know, I'm REALLY bored at work today, and just felt like writing, and you guys get to be the lucky audience if you continue to read. And FYI, there's is no prolific thought or question posed in this message either.) My ex had mentioned Sunscreem to me once or twice over a year ago, but it never really did anything to me. And then something happened... (Well, I guess something always happens, right?) I was in Pensacola, FL for Memorial Day weekend (in the US, the last weekend in May, symbolizing the beginning of summer) for my first circuit party. I was at the big party Sunday night, Abracadabra, and out there dancing with my friends when the DJ mixed out and I noticed this live band playing. I was really getting into the music and loving the group. It wasn't 'til afterwards I found out that it was Sunscreem, and I was hooked! I bought "Looking at You - The Club Anthems" as soon as I could find it. I found out that Pensacola was their official US release of it and played the thing non-stop for a month. (Looking at the cover, are flaggers popular in any other places of the world? I see them in the states all the time, but I never have seen them in London.) Needless to say, my ex was quite jealous that I got to see them live. heh heh... Well, the first weekend in Feb. of this year I was in Whistler, BC (a ski resort near the Pacific coast of Canada) for Gay Ski Week, and found out when I got there that Sunscreem would be performing at one of the events. Needless to say...I was going to be there!!! The event got to be rather long w/ a comedian, a fashion show, a martini benefit, and a drawing before the performance. By that time all the boys in the room were getting antsy, and as there wasn't dancing space, most left to go to a club across the street. Well, there was few of us that weren't leaving no matter what, and we slowly migrated towards the stage. At this point, the crowd was pretty thin, so the promoters decided that what was left of the crowd could just have a great time, and one-by-one they starting pulling us up on the stage! Now I don't know about other Sunscreem concerts, but that NEVER happens in the states. I don't remember what they all played (I think about all the pieces from the above mentioned album), but I was just way too happy to care. Here I was, dancing away with this high-energy crowd, no more than 5 feet away from the group members. There is an amazing rush that you get when Lucia sings out "Looking at you..." and is pointing right at you, smiling, and winking (OK, OK, so she did that too a bunch of the other boys too that night, but I could really care less...) Another sweet little part was the cameras were allowed at the event. Since I had my little Canon Elph in my pocket, I was able to snap a few pictures that turned out really well. So, there you have it. I'm still adding to my collection of music (still pretty slim, but growing), but loving my first Sunscreem experiences that got me hooked!!! Troy H.
