Subject: Re: SS-Sound familiar? Getting Simple

"Simple" contains sounds primarily from Sound in 70 Cities. Most obvious
is the distorted synth that sounds (with a lot of poetic license) like
an asthmatic robot inhaling. It occurs for the first time at about 0.34.
The guitar that starts at 1.10 is also from Sound in 70 Cities and the
slow synth from about 1.17 is nicely reworked from Theme For Great
Cities.

It's not a case of blatant plagiarism in my view though. SS have done
some great things with the Theme for Great Cities samples and the Sound
in 70 Cities samples are simply used in very different ways to the
original.

Both these tracks are on the Sons and Fascination CD that is currently
available. The original vinyl release, from 1981 was a double record.
Shortly after release it was split into two albums - Sons and
Fascination and Sister Feelings Call. There have been various CD
releases of this material, though some specifically lack Sound in 70
Cities. There has also been a series of special releases of singles
called Themes. Themes 1: March '79 - April 82 contains both the songs
used by SS in Simple.

While we're in total trivia mode; these two albums (S&F + SFC) where
produced by Steve Hillage. He's now the main force behind System 7 (or
777 in the States) who create driving trance music with an unusually
large amount of guitar. Both SS and System 7 approach modern dance music
with sensibilities rooted in rock and pop (IMHO).

Nice an old fogey can fill in the gaps at times!

On another tack - has anyone got the No Angel single??

I'm not that familiar with Simple Minds either (though tracks like "Let
There Be Love" and "See The Lights" bring back happy memories of 1991)
but
I would be interested to hear what tracks "Simple" off NDT is based on.
