I know that saying this is approximately equivalent to "put me in a
mental asylum" as far as this mailing list is concerned, but ever since
I got the US CD single of "No Angel", I've been listening to the mixes
of No Angel- and enjoying them.
They might not be the best Sunscreem mixes I've ever heard, but they've
definitely got things in their favour.
The Keith Litman remixes remind me a lot of the Jimmy Gomez remixes of
"Looking At You" (even in their format and lengths), but slightly
squelcher and with a little less of the 'pop' element. There's slightly
more of a club-mindedness to them (or at least, that's how it seems to
me), they build nicely, and are very competent club mixes in my opinion.
Track 5, the 'dub', isn't nearly as 'dubby' as I might have expected it
to be, but never mind.
The "Robbie Rivera's Bangin' Dub" may only contain a fraction of the
original track, but it's a nice little number in its own right. The
intro is a little lengthy listened to on its own, but as with a lot of
these mixes, I don't think they're designed to listen to, but to dance
to, and when mixed in with another track it'd work fine. The bassline's
a little flat, and it seems to spend a little too much time building-up
and not enough time at its peaks, but otherwise fine.
The "68 beats Pounding Remix" reminds me a lot of the SXS(?) remix
of "City Lights" that appears on the "Dance Supports Montserrat" CD that
'Cover Me' was on. Practically everything I said about the Bangin' Dub
above could apply to this track- in fact it often sounds suspiciously
similar. Is the fact both tracks are managed by 'juicy music' just
coincidence?
The "Taz Club Jump" is the most interesting of the Sunscreem mixes
insofar as it's the only one with 'new' elements. Does the fact that
the band are speeding everything up mean that the next album is going to
be generally faster than the other two? Or is it just dance music trends
as a whole that're getting faster?
So anyway, yes. "No Angel" with 9 remixes is a great CD, good value,
very glad to have it, another good addition to my Sunscreem collection.
(Although I ordered it from Sunscreem HQ, the copy I've got is from a US
source. I ordered about 40 quids worth of stuff from them about three
weeks ago now; is this a normal turnaround nowadays, or might something
be up?)
Stuart.
