the Lucia Dag is the day of the year with the longest night and the
shortest daylight time, 13 December, and celebrates a woman martyr from
the middle ages I think. The custom is for a woman to be Lucia, and she
wears a crown and leads a group of followers to friends whom they bring
cake. The girls dress in white long dresses and go first and the boys
wear conical hats and go last and they all hold candles. Something to that
effect, learned this in swedish class. Uninformed Nobel prize winners get
treated to this custom when such a group of swedes knock on their door
early in the morning on 13 december, and sometimes they don't know anything
about the custom and slam the door. Lucia is a Swedish name.
