So, what drugs _do_ they sell you at Newcastle University? I'm interested to
know.

Subject: SS: RE: Sun in the Tarot

Remember I posted to the Sunscreem mailing list about meeting a
girl who actually knew the band?

Carol Nichol did a Tarot reading for me. One of the cards was of
course "THE SUN"...

It's hard to get a much better card in the deck than The Sun. Some might
argue that the Star or the World or some of the other
cards are equally good, but I don't think that anyone can find a better
card.

Pollack says, "joy, happiness, and a great sense of the beauty of
life...looking at the world in a wholly new way, seeing all life
untied in joy and light." Waite thought of The Sun as a "burst of freedom."
Helena Paterson says of the Celtic Tarot's Sun, "It
represents the masculine or patriarchal influence of the father....Generally
speaking, it is linked to growth and maturity....The
creative talents are being fully utilized, promotion and recognition is
imminent."

Although the Moon in Tarot is not the Moon in astrology, the Sun in Tarot is
the Sun, and there does seem to be a lot in
common here. The Sun is the radiant center, but, although the Sun is usually
a major focus in an astrological chart, the Sun
card does not have the same center or focus in Tarot. If there is a center
or focus in the Tarot deck, it would probably be the
Fool. The Magician would also be a strong choice in many modern decks for a
center role.

The Sun is warm and simple, clear and straightforward, strong and inspiring,
liberating, refreshing. It is a place of serenity and
calm, despite its high energy. It is a card of giving, of easy, generous
giving, natural giving, giving that is free and painless
because it just flows outward naturally, without effort. The Sun is a card
of expanded awareness, a time of things easily
understood, of problems thrown into the light and thereby seen clearly.
Problems are solved. You are in control. The trilogy of
Happiness, Love, and Joy pretty well sums the Sun up, though. Paul Foster
Case says that it represents Life Power "in the
simplest and best way that we can think about it."
