OK - here we go...
I was over at SSHQ this evening, partly to get information for you lot but
mainly, I have to admit, to blag free vinyl and drink beer. Anyways...I did
get some juicy info and some interesting tunes. First off, there is a new
sunscreem album. It's been mastered, the promos are made, and the artwork is
in the pipeline. The exact details of the release are still a little fuzzy,
but we're looking at June/July, with a single preceeding in April/May. BTW:
the website redesign is unrelated. What's really interesting is that it's
NOT Out of the Woods. The title on the promo I have is "Ten Mile Bank" - I
have no idea what that relates to but I'd guess some local landscape thing.
Of course the title might change before release. The track listing might
disappoint some people, but I think there's something for everyone. It's
basically a "here's the last couple of years" plus some new stuff. I can't
give you a final track listing as there a couple of things to iron out first
but I can say the following tracks will appear, in some order:
Who Will Love Me Now (Gomez)
Cover Me (TE Vocal)
Change (Angelic)
Catch (Matt Darey)
Exodus 99 (Chiba)
Coda (Lee Coombes Mix & Annalogic Mix)
and the new stuff?? these are the totally new tracks:
Falling
Smile
Walk Under Ladders
There are also a couple of tracks which I can't mention but are 99% certain
to be on there, plus a very interesting track based on a couple of recent
remixes spliced together, which will probably be the prerelease single. The
album is one continuous mix, and sounds fantastic. The production is as we
have come to expect top-notch, mixing is smooth as silk and the tracks knit
together very nicely.
So what's the release/promo plan? Still undecided but John is pushing for a
full scale commercial release, but with a limited number available early on
the web. It will be distributed to all the major regions
(europe/us/australia/etc). Watch this space...
OH and as for OOTW, that is still around. I'm not sure why this new one is
coming out first, but there you go. OOTW will see the light of day in the
end!
And the remix comp - it hasn't been forgotten. The winner will be announced
at the end of this week...as well as details of the winner & runner up
prizes.
Hoot if you're a screemer...
Adam.

If the promos have gone out in any significant numbers, I would have
_thought_ that I'd have heard about it, since I usually spot these
things for bands I'm on the lookout for. This of course leaves me open
to looking extremely stupid if thousands of promo copies have already
been sent out... but also, if those promos had been sent out, then there
are enough 'fanatic' people on this list that I would have expected at
least one person to have found one or at least mentioned their
existence. So I'm just presuming based on available evidence.

Again, just a presumption. If you are planning to release an album in
April (which was your original hypothesis) and you want an advance or
coincidental press response then (I believe) you need to have started at
least thinking about promos by now.

This is why I contentiously referred to a 'proper' single release.
Admittedly "Coda" was an available release, but asking in my local
record store drew a blank on it, which in the eyes of many people would
mean it hasn't been released at all.
Thing is, I was kind of hoping that releases such as "Coda" and the last
year's relatively small* runs of the "Change", "Exodus" and "Cover Me"
remix 12"s [* 'relatively small' being a relative term that I can't
justify...] might have been Sunscreem keeping things ticking over and
laying the groundwork for a bigger, more commercial future album or
possibly single. To me a 'bigger' release would be the kind that
included radio promotion, the possiblity of a CD single, an outside shot
at a chart position, that kind of thing.
If Sunscreem have decided, or decide in future, to limit most or all of
their future releases to mail-order etc., then the fact that there's new
material at all will still be great, but I'll be disappointed that they
won't be having another go at being popular again. What I've heard-
"Coda" as per the remix competition (what happened to that by the way?),
the "Change" remixes...- is evidence that this mysterious "Out Of The
Woods" might just have the quality to attract a new following and
actually get somewhere. And the more money Sunscreem make the more music
they'll make... well, that's my current way of looking at it anyway. :-)
Stuart.
