I've pushed a branch "encoding" to my repo (git://github.com/rlane/sup) which has many fixes for the encoding issues ruby 1.9 creates. It successfully indexes the Enron and SpamAssassin corpuses, as well as all my own mail. AFAIK we've taken care of all the other ruby 1.9 issues, so sup should work fine now. Let me know if it doesn't.
