'deleted' means "don't show this to me even if there are new messages in
the thread.

You probably wanted to archive the thread rather than deleting it, which
removes the 'inbox' tag [so it no longer appears in your inbox] but
otherwise leaves it alone, so the entire thread will be shown if there
is any new mail in the thread.  The [a] key will archive the currently
selected thread.
