I wouldn't call it graceful, exactly, but you should be able to preserve state by running sup-dump on the original source, drop the index (move your ~/.sup/ferret directory somewhere else), edit your source.yaml file, and use sup-sync --restored --restore <dumpfile> to scan over the new source and restore the state for each message. It will take a while. Try it on a subset of messages first if possible to make sure it's working.
