OK, I presently have a s900 G3, and I have spent a lot of time getting it up

to comfort. But its a Newertech 300 1mb, and I still can't even find a

guide anywhere explaining those dip settings, and so I'm still stuck at a 43

bus speed. I've reached a plateau and may need to move on. Sure the

Newertech still works, but I've got a little extra cash right now and a bit

more zip would be cool.

Anyway, now I've got this G4 bug because I came so close to getting one.

And so I'm thinking, how are others with their s900's or j700's doing with

G4? Or is anybody running a G4? I remember a similar post to this in the

past but time has passed so maybe the feedback will be diff. I suppose

there are others who might be asking the same question about G4, so

hopefully the post will be beneficial.

I'm running an Xlr8 MPe G4/450 overclocked to 492mhz. My plan is to get the
2nd processor upgrade after I get OS X. I am 784mb on the way to 1gig RAM
(Fpm's), interleaved. I like the responsiveness of the this card and it's
configurability. Also XLR8 is very good if you have problems.

I do understand there is no 6 slot issue with our machines, that's good.

But what about speed? Is there going to be a 'noticeable' difference

between a G3 and G4, say a 400mhz card? I don't play games on my computer

but do work with graphics programs a lot. I also want to install OSX as

soon as I can. Sadly, my internet page loading wouldn't gain a thing by the

extra speed due to being on a dialup. So what's to gain?

You should see a significant speed boost using any program that is enabled
for the Altivec graphics engine. If you should go with a dual processor (not
cheap yet ~$600), your OS X performance should also be boosted as the OS is
designed to take advantage of both processors for everyday functions.

Is X the only bene of having a G4, or can we run it just fine with a G3 400?

What more would a G4 offer me that a G3 doesn't? I do like the idea of

having the daughtercard adapter (like XLR8's) which allows changing of the

processor in the future. Any more thoughts on this G4 dilemma others likely

face?

G3's will run OS X just fine, albeit w/o the enhanced Altivec Engine
performance boost in graphics (and soon to be games?) programs.

s900

560 mb ram.

PS. My unit initially did not reliably run past 480mhz. After 6 months at
this level I just boosted it to 492mhz (40 deg C) @ 54.7mhz bus speed & the
processor:cache setting at 2:1. Runs nice, and will try to push it to 500
today.

PSS. OWC (other world computing) has come out with a shareware OS X firmware
upgrade for VST Ultra tek cards, yeah!
