About a year ago I bought the XLR8 Mpe carrier card and
just this week got the G4 Zif to go with it. In the
interim I was running a 333 mhz zif clocked at 370 mhz. My
intent was to take this S900 to it's limit so rather
than buy a 450 G4 I waited until XLR8 dropped their prices
on the 500 mhz Mach Speed Zif.
The end result is a extremely stable 527mhz processor
(58.6mhz bus, 9X processor multiplier) which only
shows it's stuff when I work on large Photoshop files.
Although the machine seemed to start up fine at
540mhz, I ran into bus timing issues accessing scsi drives
and other peripherals. I don't know how OSX
would have worked because I had it installed on a beige DT
G3 and didn't like it there, (didn't have time to
learn a new system and there weren't many programs
compatible with it). Running Classic in the background
was like running Virtual PC ; can you spell D-O-G. Somehow
the installation disk got screwed up and I
eventually deleted X from my hard disk because I couldn't
figure out how to transfer it from there to any other
drive and I needed the space on that one. I refuse to buy
another copy.
