Thanks to all who gave advise regarding a IDE burner in a C600. Gave it a shot and found a good deal at Fry's 20 x 10 x 40 @ $ 59. Easy to hook up and with CD Speed tools no problems working as a CD - But burning CD's was quite another story using Toast 4.1 it goes through the motions and does a verify, but after it kicks disk out the firmware of the CD burner goes into a funk ! Keeps telling the system can not ID disk and request to format disk - Now this is with no disk in the drive and tray open ! Both attempts to use the burned CD's resulted in a crashed system. After a restart just fails to respond until a cold shutdown, then works find as an overpriced CD. You would think if she ran as a CD it should not be such a leap to a burner ? The CD Burner I purchased was made by Ikebana in China, has anyone actually had an IDE unit in place that worked as worked and if so what brand ?
In talking with the factory reps was advised that firmware loaded to almost all IDE devices is designed to work around Win 98 SE and above and commands for Mac are somewhat different and tend to be somewhat buggy when interpreted by the burner, accounting for the random actions after burning - Live and learn ! Time to hit the return line at Frys - O' the joy .....
