Good news! My Radeon 7000 is now making pretty pictures in my S900,
running OS 9.0.4.
I used the ATI extensions that were native to 9.0.4, and did not use the
installation software on the card's own provided CD-ROM. I made this
decision after reading comments on VersionTracker.com from dozens of
angry users who got a black screen after using ATI's latest Radeon
driver update, when they weren't getting one before.
A big Thank You to Ford Bailey, who made it possible for me to meet the
card's stated requirement of OpenGL 1.2.2 or newer (unavailable anywhere
except as part of OS 9.2 -- grrrrr).

P.S. Footnote to Jeff Walther: Alas, I haven't had the cojones to try
the card in one of the lesser slots, so I have no enlightenment to offer
on that score. But I can tell everyone this: It turns out that "OpenGL"
consists not only of the six extensions with "OpenGL" in their names,
but also the several whose name includes "QuickTime 3D". So if you do a
transplant of OpenGL, ideally you'd use all those extensions. However,
I'm running fine (so far) with the QuickTime 3D extensions from the far
more available OpenGL 1.2.1 installation.
