Mark, Adobe has an update for Photoshop 4 listed on their web site. In addition to Ford's comments about RAM allocation, you might try the update. You will find the update here: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Macintosh> It is at the very bottom of the page.
Excuse my stupidity, buy how did it "eat your desktop picture with the appearance control panel." I don't understand. You should also verify that you have Virtual Memory and RAM Doubler (if installed) turned off, as PhotoShop like neither of these. Nancy "Mark S.
