Rob,

List sponsor PowerOn  usually has a selection of internal replacement 
CD-ROM drives.  Last time I looked you had a choice of 2X to 24X in the 
SCSI selection.  The Apple ROM ones can be controlled by Apple's 
extensions and will boot System CD's.  As far as I know, all of the 
Apple ROM ones are compatible with the UMAX.

About six months or so ago, we replaced the CD-ROM drive in our c600 
with a used Apple 8X, that cost $25.  We did have to purchase a 
different CD to Motherboard cable.  I think that cost $3 or $4. If I 
need speed, I use the external LaCie CD-RW drive.
