Thanks Jeff and Bailey. Actually, this is all on the IDE bus built into my QuickSilver G4. I'm sorry for being off topic. The hard drive and CD are on separate IDE channels. I checked both cables. It's unlikely that both cables went bad at the same time. I guess it could be the IDE controller on the motherboard.
I added a hard drive last week and have been able to restart since then so I assumed that I must have configured that correctly. IDE isn't as complicated as SCSI, but I guess I could have made a mistake. Do you think that IDE has similar voodoo? Maybe it worked when it shouldn't have and now it stopped working? Do you think this could be caused by the ram dimm going bad? I added a cheap dimm a couple of months ago. Thanks again everybody for all your help.
